Boring Expenses

Support & FAQ

Need a hand? Most answers are below. If you’re still stuck, email expenses@bboring.app — a real person will reply.

Is my financial data private?

Yes. Boring Expenses stores your data on your device and syncs it through your own private iCloud account using Apple’s CloudKit. We run no servers of our own, collect no analytics, and show no ads. We never see your data. We are not promising not to look — the app is built so that we cannot.

Do I have to connect my bank?

No, and you never can. Boring Expenses has no bank connections at all — we never touch your bank credentials because we never ask for them. You type each expense in yourself, which takes about two seconds. That is the entire mechanism: typing it in is how you notice it.

Why is the app free? Is it going to disappear or start selling my data?

It is free because it is cheap to run, not because you are the product. There is no bank-aggregator bill, no server storing your data, and no growth team to pay — the app is a few megabytes living in your own iCloud. Free apps that died were usually free because they sold attention to advertisers. There are no ads, no analytics SDKs, and no in-app purchases here, so there is nothing to sell and nothing to switch on later.

Where is my balance? Why is there no “over budget” warning?

There isn’t one, on purpose. No balance display, no red totals, no notifications telling you that you overspent. Guilt is a retention strategy for other apps; here you get a plain list of what you spent and a chart of where it went. If you want a guilt machine, this is not it.

Is there AI in it?

No. No chatbot, no AI categorization, no “insights.” Your spending is none of a model’s business, and you already know coffee is expensive.

Does it do budgets?

No. No budgets, no category limits, no envelope system. Budgets assume the problem is discipline, and usually the problem is just not noticing. Writing it down is most of the fix.

Does it work offline?

Completely. The app is fully functional without a network connection. When you’re back online, iCloud brings your other devices up to date automatically.

How do I sync across my iPhone, Watch, and iPad?

Sign in to the same iCloud account on each device and make sure iCloud Drive is enabled. Your expenses and categories sync automatically — there’s no separate account to create.

Is there a subscription or a paid tier?

Neither. The app is 100% free with no in-app purchases, no premium tier, and no subscription. Everything you can see is everything there is.

Who should not use Boring Expenses?

Anyone who wants expenses logged automatically so they never have to think about it — that is a different philosophy and a reasonable one, but it is not this app. Skip it too if you want envelope budgeting with category limits, income and net-worth tracking, or a running balance. Boring Expenses does none of that, and none of it is coming later.

Can I export my data?

Yes. You can export everything to a CSV file at any time, filtered by month, quarter, year, or all time. Your data is always yours to take with you.
