Boring Expenses
The expense tracker that does less on purpose.
No budgets, no bank logins, no sign-up, no subscription — log an expense in two seconds and get on with your life. 100% free.
Most finance apps keep you anxious, logged in, and paying. We built the opposite.

Every promise, and the reason it cannot break
Nothing to breach
There is no account and no sign-up. No email, no password, no profile on a server somewhere. Nobody can steal a database that does not exist.
We cannot see your data
Your expenses live in your own iCloud, end-to-end encrypted by Apple. There are zero third-party analytics SDKs. We are not promising not to look — we built it so we cannot.
Free forever
No in-app purchases, no ads, no premium tier, no subscription. There is no upsell to hide, no paywall to nag, and no cancellation maze. You cannot rig a game with no money in it.
What we will never do
A promise is only worth something if it costs you something. Here is what we are giving up on purpose, forever — and what it costs you too. We would rather you knew the trade before you downloaded it.
- Ask for your bank login. No auto-import. You type your expenses in yourself. It takes two seconds, and it is the entire point — typing it is how you notice it.
- Run ads. We make nothing from your attention, which is exactly why we are not fighting for it.
- Show you a balance or a red “over budget” total. No shame screen. If you want a guilt machine, we are not it.
- Add AI insights or a chatbot. No robot money coach. We think you already know coffee is expensive.
- Charge a subscription, or sell a premium tier. No locked features dangled in front of you. What you see is the whole thing.
- Sell, share, or even see your data. No clever personalization, because we genuinely have nothing about you to personalize with.
Why it is free, and why it stays free
This is the fair question, and people are right to ask it. Free finance apps have a history: the big free one gets bought, gets shut down, and everybody who trusted it gets migrated somewhere they did not choose.
The honest answer is the cost structure. There is no bank-aggregator bill, because there are no bank connections. There are no servers storing your data, because your data is in your iCloud and not ours. There is no growth team to pay, because there is no growth team. The whole app is a few megabytes sitting in your own storage.
It is free because it is cheap to run and built by one person who is not trying to get rich — not because you are the product. The free apps that died were free because they sold your attention to advertisers. We are free because we do not want anything from you.
Who this is not for
Typing in your own expenses is real friction, and for some people it is the wrong trade. If you want something to log everything automatically so you never have to think about it, we are genuinely not your app — that is a different philosophy, and it is a perfectly good one.
You should also skip this if you want envelope budgeting with category limits, if you need income and net-worth tracking, or if seeing a running balance is the whole reason you open a money app. Boring Expenses does none of that, and it is not on a roadmap somewhere. It is a plain list of what you spent, and that is the finished product.
Manual entry is not a missing feature. It is the mechanism — typing it in is how you notice it. Noticing is most of the fix.
